What is a quarter-mile time?

In general, a quarter-mile time is the amount of time, in seconds, in which a vehicle travels 1/4 mile (402 meters). While this is not so important in everyday driving, a few car owners put a lot of importance on how fast a car is.

However, please note that a car with a low quarter-mile time may not necessarily have a high top speed, while cars geared for top speed may not have very impressive quarter miles. However, many manufacturers have been able to design cars and even sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) that have a good balance between quarter-mile times and top speeds.

1/4 mile vs 0-60 times

Quarter-mile and 0-60 times depend on many factors. For all intents and purposes, automotive experts consider quarter-mile times to be more critical than 0-60 mph times because this measures the actual time a vehicle covers one-fourth (1/4) of a mile.

The best place to get a car’s quarter-mile time is of course, at a dragstrip.

The importance of torque

Some people consider horsepower to be the king, but in the quarter-mile, torque rules. Torque is the amount of pulling power an engine produces and is very important in short-distance sprints. Ideally, an engine should produce torque at low revolutions, continuing up to just before the redline.

Traction is as vital as torque because too much torque will just cause the vehicle’s tires to spin, losing you much time in getting to the finish line. The car’s tires must be set to the optimum pressure that produces the most traction to avoid wheelspin.

To get a vehicle’s quarter-mile time, a car launches from a full stop then sprints toward the finish line in the quickest possible time.

What is a good quarter-mile time?

For most cars, especially those with small-displacement engines, anywhere from 15-18 seconds would be considered “decent”. Sportier vehicles like sports sedans, sporty coupes, and a few lower-end sports cars should run in the high 14-second range to low-13s, with unique sedan-based models like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution running low elevens down to the middle tens.

Sports cars like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches are expected to perform in the twelve-second to low ten-second range.

What is the fastest street-legal quarter-mile car?

Supercars and hypercars like top-end Ferraris, McLarens, Koenigseggs, and Paganis are capable of getting low ten to sub-ten second quarter-mile times. There are certain American cars, however, that are in a class of their own. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, for example, is capable of a tarmac-blistering 9.65-second quarter-mile time, beating the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, with a lighter and more aerodynamic body, by .05 of a second. The fastest quarter-mile run ever was 3.58 seconds, recorded in 1984. However, this was done with a rocket-powered drag car, purpose-built for high-speed record-beating runs.

Ordinary drivers might find quarter-mile times moot and academic, but for the serious car enthusiast or professional race driver, owning a car capable of getting a low quarter-mile time is definitely something to be very proud of.
